I am convinced: The successor of Windows 7 is Reactos

After a long time,

I watched the reactos site again, and it's GREAT what you made in the meantime !

In 2014 i had to move my system from XP to 7, even if i don't wanted to move.

Now i know, that this was second to the last moving. So i am glad like a snow king !

In 2020 i move my system the last time to Reactos.

In 6 years you can manage it - have fun while doing it !

Well, a bit enthusiastic, but I really think it is realistic that in 6 years, the ROS would be usable enough for consumer market. 6 years is a long period, however.

It would be nice if it would be beta by next year and be usable. I'm glad NTFS support is being added, but I see they are having a time with that. Even the Explorer stuff is turning out to be more involved than anticipated. Plus HAL or whatever doesn't work on all machines that should be compatible. I don't know if the USB bugs still exist, and I haven't tested ROS since building this new system. The last I tried it on my old AMD system (Athlon 64 x2), it would not start. I once tried it on a Dell Dimension and it gave BSOD, but haven't tested since.

Part of not testing anymore is a grudge I'm holding against getting chewed out for the last bug report I ever gave, and likely ever will. I felt I did everything correctly, but... I know, I should forgive and forget.

Looking at the current development rather six years may not be enough. The fact that a lot of things have been made, but they are only pieces of functionality that would run on the new hardware, but still wish I could say for the six years that I was wrong.

At this speed, that seems to be hard. In 2020 0.5 may not be released! Development is slow, too much issues, incompatibility, unimplemented things wait us. Fundraising campaigns do not reach their goals.

Let's pray for it! Wish that ROS and Wine will reach their goals!

It might be enough if the rate of increase is at the same rate. I see some logarithmic growth. I mean, with all the new test facilities and the latest fundraiser. While the Community Edition will be different from whatever the current version will be, the ComEd still helps that.

I haven't been without critique myself, especially on the organisational level of the ROS foundation and website/translation-system choices and all that, and some issues how people are (or were) dealt with (so I can understand Purplegirl), but this seems a bit harsh. Coding wise, it's true it isn't getting lightening fast development, and one can claim some other OS'es come or came much further in the same amount of time...true. But a lot didn't or were even slower. So coding wise, for a complete OS, I would say it's going at a reasonable pace, especially from 0.3.15 onwards. I would be sorely disappointed, if, as you say, by 2020 the 0.5 is still not released. It depends on what one wants to put in there, and what the compatibility level is that it's being sought, but I would rather venture the 0.5 might be there in 1 or two years.

Well, at least the 0.5 RCE. :P

The fundraising didn't meet it's goal, but it was a partial success, with about 25000 dollar. I remember 2-3 years back, with the donationbar, it was about 30000 dollar. One could reasonably say, thus, that this is currently about the maximum amount ROS + userbase can get amassed. Which is why, in the past, I've been trying to convince devs/PR the level of priority one gives to suggestions and help of fans should be made higher, since giving it such a low priority is short-term thinking. It's the user- and fanbase that needs to be augmented; with that more media, interest, testing, money and ultimately new devs will come. Marketing, including mouth-to-mouth, is being sorely underestimated here. Once you get popular enough, the chicken-and-egg problem where ROS is in now, will disappear. If we would ever get to a tenfold of our current 'income', we could hire some new or old talents full time, and the development would seriously take a flight as a consequence.

That said, to get to that point, one does need *something* to show first, and for that ROS needs to be usable. And not only in VM (let's face it, the public at large won't be interested in doing that). Which is one of the reasons I focus on HW testing. The moment ROS gets 'workable' on real HW, and usb and the most important driver(s)/devices work, one has the potential to appeal to the masses (and not only testers or IT-knowledgeable and interested people). I think that's the 0.5 beta (or at least, I hope so). From that point on, the interest will be self-sustaining. But we're not at that treshold yet. For now, the coding-effort and PR-effort are both needed, but there is little balance in it, currently, since one gets top-priority, and the other almost nothing (well, at least from the bottom-up perspective). I wish this view on 'giving it low-priority' would change, for the sake of getting a long-term perspective...but on the coding side, one can't really complain much, I think.

Do you mean CORE-5933? That was successfully solved in 3 weeks, quite nice.

Honestly I love reactOS but considering all the nice features in Windows 10 and how it'll come out soon, it seems rather unrealistic to say reactOS can be a true successor to Windows 7 so easily, it'll take more time than this but I hope one day reactOS will be able to compete with Microsoft to make the best NT based OS :D

Yes. What I gave was essential to the same bug, and the remark several down was out of order. I mean, saying the icons were also missing was necessary to give the work around to find the current bug. I wasn't reporting another bug through the backdoor. That other bug had the same cause and complicated the testing. Normally, you'd click My Computer to get explorer open, but if that is gone, then it is pertinent to give the workaround to the bug to that is preventing the testing of another bug. They were nested. I am one of those who works best in an informal environment, so if things become too formal, I won't be around. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way. Yet I know why things are as they are. The devs only have so much time, and so it is best that bugs are reported in a standard sort of way and done as concisely and succinctly as possible. We don't want devs spending hours trying to provoke a bug that doesn't exist, or spending extra effort to find one that does exist when a little better wording of the report would have helped locate the problem faster.

Anyway, back on topic, it is kinda doubtful that we'd be the mainstream successor to Win 7, though certainly worthy to shoot for. However, we are certainly picking up the pace some since more and more testing tools and functions are being written, and things are being done a bit more "scientifically." Plus the fundraising and contracts with proven developers also helps a lot.

Perhaps one could rephrase it and say 'The successor of Windows is ReactOS'. This would eliminate the time contraints yet still give hope? :ugeek:

I think Reactos - IMO - is the future of operating systems and Windows is the past. 8-)

Oh, Win8 and 10 may have sokme nice new Features, but to be blunt: it only works on 20% of my machines.

I have about 10 Computers at home/in my Family, but only 3 have the necessary cpu-features and only 2 of them a wddm capable graphiccard.

On all my machines I CAN DO:
- watch/edit Videos
- listen to Music
- surf the web
- do Office work
- do CAE/CAD design
- run all the Software that i need
- manage my data, etc etc

But I CAN NOT DO:
- install latest Windows

Isn't it pervert?!

I'd rather become a poor nonpaid Ros-Coder than work one second with win8/10. I've decided to boycott the latest MS with all my being...

It sounds like a Russian proverb that says: "Gonna have my ears frostbitten to spite my Mom!" :)
