ReactOS Server 2013

Post by oldman »

ReactOS Server 2013 - coming to a computer shop near you!!!

(Windows Server 2003 - ReactOS server 2013).

Can it happen? There is less than 4 months left.

ReactOS will be a stable server OS before it will be a stable desktop OS.

So what do you think?
Please keep the Windows classic (9x/2000) look and feel.
The layman's guides to - debugging - bug reporting - compiling - ISO remaster.
They may help you with a problem, so do have a look at them.

Quite the opposite. Stable has a very different meaning for desktop and for server. For server, you expect HUGE uptimes compared to desktops, so achieving enough stability for a desktop is probably easier than achieving enough stability for a server. I think you are mixing features with stability: some desktop features are not needed on a server, but the other way around is also true, there are things you need in a server that you don't need in a desktop.

how do expect to run a server on an os that does not support more than 4GB rams
and does not have a driver identification wizard
and does not support most of the drivers
nice dream by the way

Well, my dear friend... I see no reason why 4GB is not enough for Basic Server functionalities. And ever heard of PAE and our WIP 64 bit port?
Driver Wizard rudimentary works. Bit yes, there some stuff to do.
Driver support depends on what drivers you mean.
ReactOS is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

Web developer here. You don't need any of those things to run a simple website. However, if your website is important, then you obviously don't want to use something as unstable and vulnerable as ROS on the production server.

when you say server it is not limited to web hosting
servers are used in radios and tv channels and network places and way other things
so dont ever limit a server to web hosting
and these I mentioned above well guess need more than ROS can handle now
as for PAE i asked about it and the here ( http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12565 ) and @Z98 said it is not stable
as for 64 port well it is in progress and no much info about it and no even a trunk build
so far ROS will fail as a server except for web hosting simple sites without video streaming and other new eye catchy features

*sigh*
File Server, Print Server, Mail Server, DC, Terminal Server, Database Server, Build Server, ... ...
OK, ROS wont work for most, but most mentioned work fine on 4 GB RAM

I used webhosting as an example. The same thing is true for most of kinds of servers. Most of the software (I worked with webhosting and media production servers before) will work fine if PAE is not implemented or if there is no >4Gb RAM support. You cannot use ROS on a server because the system is unstable, not because any particular feature is missing.
