Installing and running ROS on USB!

Post by Jaix » Thu Dec 08, 2005 11:33 pm

This isn't new but it is very cool!

It is possible to install to and run ReactOS form an USB memory stick!

A guy that calls himself TOTMS here on the forum (Konrad Strachan IRL i think) has made a tutorial on this subject, I'd say, try it you who have USB boot support!

You can find the tutorial and some history here:

maybe it is not that clever to write your email in such a plain text form due to spambots.

Good tutorial.
Will this also work in the same way on external USB hard-disks?

Is there a reason why you couldn't use qemu directly on the USB thumb drive with 'qemu -hda /dev/sda -cdrom ReactOS.iso -boot d'?

QEmu is painfully slow compared to real hardware...

I meant for the installation. The directions have you install ReactOS onto an image using qemu, then copying this image onto a thumb drive.

Oh so you mean use the actual flash disk as the 'c' drive for installing ROS? Hmm interesting, I have not tried that. I cant think of any reason why it would not work. Can you let me know if there are any differences if/when you try it?

Ill dig up the old tutorial and post an updated version - give me a couple of days- a bit busy with other projects at the moment.

Can you also include it into the wiki? Would give a good "HOWTO/xy" article.
I'd then translate it to German.

Good idea!

There must be other people who want to run/testdrive ReactOS from their USB Memory Stick... 8)

Well, it's an old thread, but I don't think is less interesting, USB-enabled OS is just soo cool! Include a wiki tutorial too, that's a good idea.

Ok sorry for the delay. I have the week off work now so I finally have some free time. I want to test and see what difference the new release makes to the process before I write anything so give me a few days. :)
