SAC?

Post by oldman » Tue Aug 13, 2013 10:13 am

Can anyone enlighten me?
ION has been committing a lot of code and the messages refer to SAC, SACMSG, SACDRV, so what does SAC stand for?

Thanks.
Please keep the Windows classic (9x/2000) look and feel.
The layman's guides to - debugging - bug reporting - compiling - with some complementary scripts.
They may help you with a problem, so do have a look at them.

There has also been a mention of EMS, some basic links to info about both follow.

SAC: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... s.10).aspx
EMS: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... S.10).aspx

SAC here is Special Administration Console. The "EMS" in question along with it is Emergency Management Services and is not related to "EMS" as used under MS-DOS.

Yep, I was quite surprised by these links too. :? Here is one of the still surviving pages about Microsoft's implementation of the expanded-memory manager http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 22864.aspx

(speaking of memory management: 386th post  )

386 posts? LOL! Perfect coincidence. At least you didn't post 80,386 posts. ;-)

At any rate, I am not sure of the significance of this new code. I know it is part of the Server 2003 architecture, and if I am not mistaken, I imagine it could help with debugging and help with those who want to boot the OS without a GUI. But someone can correct me if I am wrong on that. I just don't see how it can help most of us.

Please take a look at the last sentence of this commit message and maybe do a Google search. ;)

I read the commits daily, but not everything in them mean nothing to me. Like I said, I don't know how that can help MOST of us and comments about ARM and other non-PC platforms are of no use to most of use. I don't use an ARM or some other non-x86/x64 platform, nor do most I know, at least not in the same way as a PC.

Yes, I can see the value in keeping up with ARM and other platforms as Android, RT, and other things emerge, but sometimes when I see all the ARM talk around here, I feel like those of use who use PCs are being squeezed out. I know the concept of forks offend so many here, but if ReactOS becomes ARM-dominated at the expense of PC users, then some of us may want to fork the project. I see a lot of trends around here I don't like, but I try to keep my mouth shut for the sake of unity.

Like I said, just because I say I don't understand how SAC can help MOST *normal* users, that doesn't mean I am a newbie or unable to read.
