What can ReactOS replace?

Post by jacatone » Mon Aug 05, 2013 10:20 pm

Can ReactOS be used to replace Win7 and 8? I'm guessing it doesn't come with a partition-er, so do you have to wipe your HDD and lay down a partition table first? Thanks.

jacatone did you read the main page of the reactos webpage ??
ReactOS 0.3.15 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing purposes.

*Epic facepalm*
Just think of ReactOS as the XP beta, Whistler.

If this thing was started back in 1998 according to Sourceforge, why isn't it more developed by now? Is it just meant as a Win2000, WinXP replacement?

1. Complexity of the OS => not many programmers can work on it in their free time.
2. MS Windows is a proprietary OS and a lot of things are not documented => they need to be reverse engineered and documented and then _someone else_ must implement that in code.

If I'm not wrong, it is meant to be a NT 5.2 (Win 2003) replacement.

ReactOS currently aims to replace Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, however in its current alpha state, it can replace Windows 95, because of the several bugs that still torment the OS.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP were not around in 1998. Development back then was to make a Windows 95 replacement. We, obviously, have switched targets since then, so it's not like we've been working on a Win2K3 replacement since 1998.

It may be able to handle some Win95 software, but much of it (if I'm not mistaken) is 16-bit software requiring VDM. ROS doesn't have VDM, so that's out the window. (But you can still use DosBox.)

Win3.1 Software is 16 bit. Real Win95 software is 32 bit.

Thanks for the correction, EmuandCo. So I guess ROS can handle Win95 software. :D
And what's the status of VDM development?
