Web Service

Post by SuperDog » Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:27 pm

As a web developer, I think the project, including the operating system itself, would benefit from a web service. That would create a single channel of communication between the operating system and external project facilities.

Because of the nature of the project, other types of clients (eg. other websites, mobile apps etc.) would be free to consume the web service as well.

The web service could be used to eg.:
- get the latest version number
- get notifications of new releases or other forms of updates
- get a list of compatible applications, each with a download URL
- get notifications of any known bugs when running an application
- allow the user to run a test suite and submit the results
- allow all users running the system at a particular moment to communicate via a chat

and so on..

I'd like to know what do you think of the idea, especially what sort of data you'd expect to be available via the web service and what kind of clients you would expect to consume it.

I hope I understood your suggestion correctly.
if I can use dynamic data from web within other, written by myself, programs/scripts, I'd like to have the actual Version Number and Trunk Release Number and may a flag that shows which type of builds are currently built (because sometimes the build is broken or the buildslave is down).
This would make many things easier for my automatic download and installation script.

@gonzoMD
@vicmarcal

Everything you've mentioned would be technically feasible, given enough support from the backend facilities.

Anything else you can think of?
