For you to realise that this is some young lad sat in his bedroom writing software and trying to promote it through these forums.
This is not some company with employees as has been suggested.
Do some research on patternjake and element software.

A few weeks ago much of the software was available for about £4, it's now all free.
Can you run a business and pay developers on this?

I don't want to see the users of this forum taken advantage of and for our forum to be used as a PR base.

Once a public build is ready to be released, and source code is ready to be passed back to ReactOS, that is the time when someone will contact offical developer channels.

Ged: How on earth do you expect me to sit here coding an entire OS by myself?

For your information, I have several helpers on the net who work along side me to code portions of the software. I do have a life.

Sheesh. It probably would have been better in the long run for us to use a slimmed down linux variant and use the offical Wine to recreate our operating environment. You blow this way out of porportion Ged, I am not using this forum for PR. Some people became intrested in some other projects such as kestrel and I was merely providing an update.

Hence I will *abide* by your laws here on this forum, and i will only give updates on status related to Element OS. If anyone else wants further update on kestrel or anything else, please discuss with me via e-mail

Dont want to make this forum untidy now, do we?

It's not my intention to blow it out of proportion.
I'm just sceptical as the story has been dragged in all directions and nothing has come out of it.
It was originally put across as a software house and this has proven not to be the case.
I also think it would have been curtious to contact the dev community and discuss things. That would have removed a lot of preconcived doubt.
I'm actually unsure as to the motive for such a project, we'll have a new XP compatible shell in the not too distant future. Combining that with Firefox / Opera and mono i'm not sure what ElementOS is hoping to achieve.

Anyway, I do wish you luck with this.
Maybe we will cross paths in the future and I'll be proven wrong :)

patternjake: My apologies about saying the "Frozen development" when you said in the previous post it is again in development.
But it´s completly true that from the post you said ElementOS is frozen until this post where you unfrozen the development there were many others talking about other Element non-Free-Apps(which btw now they are free..).Im pretty sure this was the reason to move the thread to off-topic.

Nice to see you are working in ElementOS again, and have results soon, so you can beat the un-believers with the power of the fact.

GedMurphy: True. We are expecting with Love that XP explorer(explorer-new.exe). Which one is going to be released first: ElementOS or explorer-new? Anyway, having an alternative shell for those "I-want-a-better-design" people isnt going to hurt Ros.

Hi again everyone!

Just wanted to post an update since its been a while since the last hehe ;)

We have been incredibly busy over these past few months, since we have been working on the core applications that will make it into the beta release of ElementOS, and we have been working on some shell namespaces that will be specific to File Digger, although maintaining compatibility with the ReactOS Explorer (if you wanted to use ReactOS explorer on ElementOS it would still show up etc)

We have also been removing unused code from ReactOS which, since many components / shell dialogs have been removed for ElementOS, the codes referencing to these shell places have been removed and pointers added to the new shell.

Finally, we have opened up the ElementOS website a bit more by replacing it with a Wiki format, which will please most people, since it will be easier to contribute to the ElementOS project, and keep things a bit cleaner.

http://www.elementsoftware.co.uk/elementos/wiki

As for a release date goes, it could be quite some time before the first release is avaliable for public downloading. In the meatime, Ill make sure to keep you all updated more frequently xD

We will be uploading some fresh, new screenshots of the current build and even a demonstration video, which will please alot of people ;)

Until the next update then.

And still no patches upstream? Or did i miss any?

Haos : No, since the release has not been released for the public yet. Once the binary is released, the patches will also be avaliable for download on the ElementOS wiki.

Like I said before, a release date cannot be set yet since there is still major work being done on the shell (the desktop is not fully implementd yet)

I will keep you updated.

Sure you've discovered tons of bugs; it would be good to receive some bug reports.

doomonyou : Kestrel is still in active development, and we have even reached the 0.0.0.4 version. The public build will be released when it hits 0.0.1 (pre-beta)

The ElementOS kernel (ReactOS) is open source, and provided to you under the following license:

GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 3, 29 June 2007
It's right GPL version? I can't find that now on ReactOS site, but i think that is under older version.

Why would you want any? It's not as if he's actually going to improve things.
Element Software products are distributed under a proprietary license.
...
However, in the case of ElementOS software, we make exceptions to this license since ElementOS uses a modified version of the open source ReactOS kernel and userland. Element Software hereby provides the exception that any open source components that are used in ElementOS operating system, the source code for these modifications are avaliable to the public for download, modification and free use.
Oh. interesting. You do realise that you can't re-license any open-source components that you use, yes? If you're going to be distributing derivatives of ReactOS they would have to be licensed under the same terms as ReactOS itself, so ie, GPLv2+.

The open-source hippies are going to have a field day.
