Usefulnes of COM interfaces in shell programming

Post by etko »

When some advanced devs and windows coders look back on COM, what do they think, was this technology useful or not?

From my personal perspective I see it only usefulness of this from OLE perspective (if I got it right and OLE means EXCEL within WORD document). But if I would be writing shell myself I would go the clearly defined C-interface plug-in way. Some libs like OpenGL use this for ages and it works well.

On the other side Linux has KParts and GObject (or how is it named) is there truly so much added value?
