Happy 20th, XP

Post by Kevin Castro »

XP—twenty today.

There remains enough abandonware for XP to remain quite useful online (but not as your primary websurfer). Even today, you can do a fresh install and find almost everything you need. The Service Packs, updates, and 2019 Bluekeep patch can all be found.
Firefox 52 no longer offers add-ons; but if you search "Adblock Plus Firefox", you'll find it. And, if you desire, FF52 still enables you to login to PayPal so you can make a donation to the Adblock Plus developer. Avast remains a friend. GMX and gmail function perfectly but some links might not show images.
Firefox 52 is also a good backup if Firefox Quantum goes wonky after an update. Just this month, on three different Win-7 PCs (KARETTA, KATHENA, and KRAEGA), I couldn't check the official weather forecasts. (By the way, no redirect happened or could be forced. I should also point out that IE opened the website; and thankfully, the website has no ads.)

But wait—I'll just give it a try on my trusty XP quad-core (WALLABY).

But wait—I'll just give it a try on my trusty 0.4.13 PC (KATRELL), she hasn't been booted in thirteen months.

Because the internet has become so bloated and Firefox 52 seems to need a fair slurp of chip, you'll need a high-speed dual-core (3.5GHz or higher) or a meaty quad-core (3.2GHz or higher) for a decent internet experience. On the flip-side, FF52 requires only a sip of RAM—as little as 2GB will be fine. Obviously with this spec, Office 2000 is going to do everything at the speed of light. And Adobe Reader XI will be quite light on its feet as well.
(In contrast, Firefox Quantum seems to need little chip but will drink up a lot of RAM.)

I still believe that one day soon, ReactOS 32-bit will be able to do more than XP currently can.

Here is XP-SP3/FF52/FP31 streaming MSNBC in October 2021. Happy Birthday, XP, you beautiful creature.

XP always on an older PC.

Main PC runs Bodhi Linux (64bit). Have absolutely no use for Windows 8 or newer.
