This seems like a needless decision to me. (MS ditching DirectSound, and embracing a 3rd party API)--- DirectSound is widely documented, and is accepted as the win32 gold standard for audio. Replacing it with a brand new API, and axe-ing the 3d sound support from DirectSound just seems...... Illogic...

ROM stands for READ ONLY MEMORY. Again, it depends on how they built the machine. It is possible (but unlikely) that they installed 512MB of EEPROM for the ROM. This would be substantially more expensive than using a 512MB SD card with the write protect switch turned on, but potentially much faster ...

That would depend on how they implemented the 'rom'. The cheapest way I can think of, would be an SD card, with the write protect switch on, attached to an IDE interface (Yes, you CAN do that) The system would still have to accept that there is no perminent storage though. Means it would only work w...

The fact remains that if you have an NTFS volume, you are likely to have a valid windows site license. This entitles you to use the MS NTFS driver, so why not use the genuine article? You probably wouldnt need to have a fully blown NT/2k/XP install to get the driver. I expect that when ROS is mature...

<SNIP> Dos VM will still be missing in 0.5.0 but a lot of people use dosbox anyhow. <SNIP> You know, it gets rather frustrating hearing that. DosBox is not a suitable replacement for NTVDM. NTVDM does more than just "DOS." It also works with WINOLDAP to do 16bit WOW. (And in 64bit platfor...

having old sub-systems for older programs is a nice feature, but i think we shouldn't try to be compatible with everything under the sun. the primary focus i think, should be to get and keep compatibility with Win32 and on. besides just because we want binary compatibility with windows doesn't mean...

I assume you are mocking my signature. (So many people do...) However, that is a pretty neat claim. I have recently come into posession of an old arcade console upright that is broken, and intend to hook it up as a MAME arcade machine. Does your table have a Mini ITX inside? Perhaps someday ReactOS ...

MSDOS supports any disk drive device that the BIOS INT13 interface supports. This is because DOS has the bios service all those calls. ReactOS is a 32bit world environment, and needs something that lives in the 32bit world to service those devices. I am surprised that "Generic ATAPI.SYS" d...

Win16 apis are actually needed for some software titles, because they use a 16bits installer. Older version of MS Office are noteworthy examples of this.

I doubt nVidia will follow suit. From the past, nVidia has been paranoid that revealing too much about the internal workings of their chips (by open sourcing their drivers) would lead to its competators "Stealing" some of their ideas. Unless nVidia has a sudden change of heart, I wouldn't ...

I wonder... I have heard that the Vista desktop uses 3D hardware capabilities to generate it's windows... Does this mean that eventually windows Vista is going to produce true reflection mapped windows? DAMN that would be distracting--- Move your mouse over the window, and watch it have a shiny, dis...

I am well aware of the license Mathias. I am also aware of the developer's personal views about "distros" for reactos. Also, ReactOS is still a copyrighted work. It just is not patented, and you have unlimited alteration and redistribution rights. That does not mean you can remove any Copy...

The icons and graphics are stored as ICO resources in the source tree. You can change those there. Where to change the boot logo, I don't know, but no matter what you put, prudence implies that you will make note of the original software's authors, and give them their due credit--- So, if you do a f...

In that case-- You dont need to have the drive laying perfectly flat, if it is a Flashmemory drive based device, since there would be no moving parts to get gyroscopic vibrational damage. The drive can be mounted at a funny angle inside your case, and be just fine. You might be able to squeeze a lar...
