@Blackcrack: essentially speaking, such a thing is allready existent. it is called WinAPI. in detail it is THE API and not such a special API, but it enables in one way or another the use of such functions. Matthias is completely right, what does an OS do good if there are 100 plugins and stuff, but...

nah, 256 colors should work...... only problem is whether a default palette is used or the one from the BMP is taken. if it uses the one from the BMP it looks quite OK.

da diese widgets kein bestandteil von windows sind und meistens statisch gelinkt oder auch als DLL mitgeliefert werden, würde das ganze nicht viel sinn machen.

abgesehen davon sollten die basis-applications auf WinAPI basieren, dadurch sind sie schneller, kleiner, nativer.

Limit direct access to system hardware by DOS programs (especially IO). i think DOS programs should have NO direct hardware access at all, since then they could eventually crash the system / make it unstable (at least no unattended access). maybe some sort of supervising could take place, or, much ...
