Re: The Linux Unified Kernel
Don't misunderstand, I wasn't suggesting ReactOS abandon it's project to work on a Linux distribution or anything. I was merely imagining a achievable way to have a working Windows-compatible OS that people would use. I believe ReactOS' cleaner approach to be very valuable to projects like Longene a...

ReactOS and Longene
I see Longene as a more practical approach to a free Windows implementation than ReactOS since it takes the already mature Linux kernel and extends it to support NT's kernel features, rather than starting a new kernel from scratch. Still, ReactOS's approach is cleaner and without it the Longene proj...

Re: Death of XP
Regardless, we still have to wait for ReactOS to be usable for daily use. It won't matter if the subsystem (ARWINSS) is working great if the Kernel and stuff aren't usable yet.

Re: Death of XP
Maybe, but ARWINSS runs on top of ReactOS. Which brings us back to waiting for ReactOS to be usable.nicamarvin2005 wrote: not before ARWINSS

Re: Death of XP
It would be great if ReactOS was usable before 2014. I think Longene (Linux Unified Kernel) has a far better chance of becoming usable by then.

Re: ReactOS and fragmentation
I believe both FAT and NTFS are prone to fragmentation. I believe most modern file systems (Ext, XFS, ReiserFS etc.) don't tend to have fragmentation issues. All ReactOS (or Windows for that matter) would need are drivers for a modern file system.

Re: Wine's X Window System dependency
Yeah, I've heard that they could use a nested X.org but like you said it's sounds like it would be less efficient.
Still I wonder if there would be an advantage to using Cairo as a backend, or would it mostly be a disadvantage?

Re: Wine's X Window System dependency
That's great. So it wouldn't be improbable to see Wine running with Wayland driver someday.

Wine's X Window System dependency
I understand the ARWINSS is kind of a port of Wine to ReactOS but without the X.org dependency. I'm wondering if Wine were to use something like Cairo as a backend would that make Wine more portable to non-X.org systems? (keep in mind I'm not a programmer)

Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
Well I couldn't help myself :) WICE32 Wine Implemented Compatibility Enhancement. http://hem.bredband.net/matlod/WICE.png http://hem.bredband.net/matlod/WICE.psd I kind of like that one. I definitely like the logo for it. The name might not fit logically though. What is that thing called, in the lo...

Re: Win32 server idea
I'm sure I don't fully understand the concept here (I'm not a programmer) but I'm all for speeding up development and increasing stability. 10 years is a long time. Though Wine took 15 before they even release a version 1.0. I used to believe that reverse engineering Windows was a inherently difficu...

Re: Arwinss : Alternative names + logo request
Yeah, I'm not sure of the legal consistences of naming it FreeNT either. But I like that it's trivial name. I think that's what I like about the name FreeDOS.

Re: We need to better use Social Media in ROS
The http://www.myreactos.com is using Drupal. Currently is using RosCMS as an old legacy from previous devs, maintaining it is hard, so as z98 said, the next website will use a non-own CMS. PS: The big header was a blatant-bad copy of http://www.haiku-os.org one.. :) Wow, I can see why you'd want t...

Re: We need to better use Social Media in ROS
Agree. I made a layout trying to fix the problems you have pointed out. http://www.myreactos.com It has really bad icons(yes, i am not a designer) but the layout was designed by a professional designer and imo it is quite simplistic and easy to use, plus all the social media integration. That is a ...
