ReactOS VMWare edition

It may be a good idea to create a special "VNWare edition" of the ROS.
VMWare player and server are free.
Some parts of the ROS may be simplified and optimized for VMW.
The major effect would be increased popularity with all positive consequences, maybe even financial support from VMW.

Re: "Programmer's Ethics Essay" summer assignment

Please don't assume Western culture in its current state to be anyhow superior. Implementation of individual's ethical principals in individual's creations is up to individual, and there is no such thing as common ethics (it always differs by time, society, and social group). Promoting ethical views...

Re: What do you think of Unix Like systems?

Shouldn't we consider MS Windows to be a Unix-like system? :) They have so many common concepts: file, file system, driver, how applications interact with OS, etc. Of course, there is a big difference between WIn32 API and POSIX, but they still similar enough for "portability" wrappers to ...

Re: Community Project: ReactOS Compatibility Manager

Windows has its own method of managing compatibility (since Vista, and maybe earlier), and ReactOS should too. The idea behind it is to allow software to work on a platform that it wasn't necessarily designed for. That's what ROS should do for both applications and drivers. ROS may ask user at 1st ...

Re: Using linux drivers in reactos !

What I see is an extremely naive interpretation of the micro-kernel architecture. The security benefits you speak of come at a considerable performance cost, something like 30% last time I read up on the topic. Operating systems seeking to use that model are generally designed to fit that model to ...

Re: Using linux drivers in reactos !

Any improved stability, flexibility, or security would be an illusion. If the benefit doesn't come from ReactOS itself, then it will not be around in the long run. Again, the goal of ReactOS is to be a Windows-compatible OS. Take a look at Qubes OS, QNX, Genode, even Puppy Linux. They are se...

What do we expect from ROS?

Let's imagine ROS is ready for everyday use. What would you do with it and why? Would you erase MS WIndows preinstalled on your new PC and install ROS? Do you expect ROS to be faster, more reliable, more secure than MS Windows? Do you want ROS be backward compatible with older MS Windows (starting f...

Re: Using linux drivers in reactos !

Allow me to state here and now that code reuse from the Linux kernel will do nothing to help shorten the time it will take. It is far more likely to increase the amount of work and time needed I agree. This issue came up on this forum repeatedly, and this answer was given several times (shouldn't i...

Re: Using linux drivers in reactos !

As I understand, "using" Linux drivers may be implemented as running Linux kernel in parallel with ROS in a way linux would handle selected devices and interface corresponfing drivers in ROS (in a way similar to para-virtualization), something like device <==> linux driver <==> linux appli...

@erkinalp, probably you missed :) ("smile") after "headquoters". It was a joke, OK? Sorry, I misspelled "headquarters".
BTW, among other meanings of "headquarters" dictionary gives "a center of operations".

Easy Testing

It's rather laborous and time consuming to do some "serious" testing (I mean professional grade). However it may be helpful if anybody who tries ROS could have simple convenient way to report irregularities/bugs, preferably by just hitting a hot key, which would take a screenshot, get user...

Re: "What killed the Linux desktop"

ReactOS is only maintaining certain binary compatibility for now because of it's nature. It's still in Alpha and has no place to go. Once the codebase becomes huge and it will. You'll see how difficult binary compatability becomes. You may have noticed that many free programs become commercial. So,...

The best "support"-joke:

User (angry): I'm not gonna do that!!!

Of course, 2nd is famous "My cup-holder doesn't work!"

Then why are you here? We all in some way like Microsoft product(s), that's why we want to mimick them. There are many better suited forums where you can all together bash Microsoft all day happily :-) Making products we like does not entitle Microsoft to be liked. 1st of all people pay MS, so they...
