Re: Suggestions

There is a real hardware ReactOS installation tutorial here: http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=11380 I'm not sure a video would really help much because when something doesn't work, it usually just doesn't work at all. There is a supported hardware section on the wiki: http://www.rea...

Re: What's wrong with unix tradition

I didn't try the Mint, though it's the most probable distro along with elementary for me to switch to, but I can't see the difference between MATE and Cinnamon. Is there any large one and where? MATE is an updated classic GNOME 2. Mint has a few different defaults, but with MATE you can customize i...

Re: What's wrong with unix tradition

Exadurating, my point is that Unix tradition promotes low self-respect (poor UI for yourself ), neglect (making people type numerous commands), and tolerance to humiliation (for ex. "sudo" each time). Forcing your users to use a user interface that poorly matches their needs can have a very negativ...

Re: Firefox x86-64 for Windows will be discontinued

 It seems like the main problem was none of the plug in vendors wanted to update their plugins. It also doesn't help that they still have to support the 32-bit version, and don't feel like managing the user confusion between the two (especially in regards to plugins). The 64-bit version of Wi...

Re: Please, update page more often, if possible.

I have read that beta version would come soon (after the possible 0.3.15 release). Any comments whether this news is legitimate or not? That is false. ReactOS is nowhere near a state that could be reasonably called "Beta". It is even unlikely they will bump the version number to 0.4 (still Alpha) i...

Re: What's wrong with unix tradition

In the Unix/Linux world there is quite a bit of resistance towards deprecating archaisms. Unix developed on large mainframes with dumb terminals. Back then storage bytes and CPU cycles were precious and few - on a timeshare you might be charged money for both! Even on a Mini/Micro you would pay out ...

Re: Please, update page more often, if possible.

I'm sure that date is only tentative. Based on previous history they will probably branch around that date, rebranch a few weeks later as several more bugs get fixed on the trunk, and then the branch will sit around for a few weeks or months as blocker bugs get fixed. Then the glorious release happe...

Re: What is ROS BootLogo video mode?

The boot logo is only 16 colors. It uses standard VGA 640*480*16 color resolution, but the boot logo uses it's own 16-color pallet that consists mostly of shades of blueish green. That makes it look a bit nicer. If you are not familiar with pallets, the video color limitations in early VGA cards was...

Re: Why ReactOS is failing in Virtual PC?

If I'm not mistaken, isn't that ROS now has VGA standard added into the OS? ReactOS has always had a standard 640*480*16 VGA driver. The problem is it defaults to a VESA driver during install, and then falls on its face when it turns out VESA 2.0 isn't actually present. (It aught to fall back to VG...

Re: Why ReactOS is failing in Virtual PC?

The problem with virtualizers is they only emulate the bare minimum needed to run a specific OS. Step outside of that bare minimum with an oddball driver, an unknown OS service pack, or an OS that the virtualizer doesn't officially "support" and things fall apart. I don't know the specific issue, bu...

Re: Hardware compatibility rant

The only answer to that is slipstreaming the driver(s), but that is a PITA and nobody should have to do that. Just more proof that "modern" computer designs are a failure. At this point all they have to do is remove the ability to boot anything other than 64-bit OSes and they will no longer be "IBM ...

Re: How is it ReactOS don't get into trouble for this by Win

Were these just commenters or is someone saying this in a video? I'll repeat what I said before: ReactOS is a 100% genuine, original, open source operating system. It is based on publicly published documentation. That is the message that anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get. Any remaining concer...

Re: Do You Still think the old website is ugly?

Yes, the idea was that phase one was to get a new back end in place. Then phase two to improve the design. Phase three: profit! Unfortunately migrating from a proprietary CMS to a new system isn't as easy as it sounds. Expecially when the system has to seamlessly share accounts between CMS, wiki, bu...

Re: Successful install on Dell optiplex GX270

If there is a Windows XP "inf" driver for your network card, there is a good possibility it will work. Sound cards are more hit-and-miss, usually more miss. They both have to be installed at fist boot when it asks for the drivers.
