Windows Vista Begins To Get Real - see the preview

Lots of screenshots and ideas for the ROS team when they implement the GUI. Some of the changes from XP should not be all that radical if implemented early on. Would save alot of catch-up later on in the ROS development. http://www.desktoppipeline.com/handson/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=175700613&pg...

Too bad DOS is owned by MS, too. There are alot of free DOS-based GUIs out there. And eventually anything that pretty well runs in DOS should run in ROS. So a free DOS-based GUI could eventually lead to a good free Windows clone like ROS. It would be like re-inventing the Windows progression in hist...

If you use an exact copy of it, sure they could ruffle your feathers but that is not going to happen. Xerox began the mouse cursor shaped like an arrow, not Microsoft, and there icon was a black arrow pointing straight up. Previously the first white arrow look for a mouse cursor was by Visicorp and ...

I have a feeling it is the ability to run different X windows based GUIs that has appealed to so many Linux users. I know I've appreciated being able to select IceWM at time when KDE was such a big hog of resources and I wanted the extra power to visually see the files on the disk in a timelier mann...

If you stop the X server then yes, all of the services are still running. Your commandline is fully functional in Linux, unlike Windows were stopping a video dependent service can crash the system.

This would be great. I hope people get this implemented if the menues get fancy enough to become semi translucent as shown in your fvwm idea. Sure made it easier to read those menues.

Stamping out those memory leaks is going to take awhile. I don't envy you on doing that. Kudoes to the devs for your hard work!

Come on, doing the START button the RIGHT WAY is not a bad idea. Its actually closer to where my cursor spends a majority of its time.

It could be indeared as the front slash versus back slash type of argument.

"Classic Start Menu" mode is the only one I use in XP, too. Glad to see I'm not the only one to look at the newer start menu and to think WTF is that? However, I gotta say that Longhorn/Vista is moving into a nice direction, too.

Classic windows look is an oxymoron. What do you mean? Before I answer that question take a quick look at the Windows timeline: 1981 Sept. Interface Manager 1983 Windows® wird erstmals vorgestellt 1985 Nov. Windows 1.0 für 8088 CPUs 1987 Dec. Windows 2.0 für 386 CPUs bis zu 16 MByte RAM adressierba...

That would defeat the whole purpose of the registry. Maybe it was not clear enough what I mean. The registry would be the same, only the things were stored in special locations and then linked together. HKLM/Software/xyz would still be HKLM/Software/xyz, but when you remove the installation folder,...

Something just dawned on me, windows managers have never did a very decent job of supporting 640x480 resolution or smaller for that matter. There should a way to cascade CPL windows when the desktop is not visible. Normally you can only use CPL windows at their native size. The MSC modules do not sh...

 @Jaix YaST is a one-stop-shopper's GUI way of looking at system administration. Most of the CPL's can be used from commandline but most people didn't know that because the documentation from Microsoft in this area is horrible to nonexistent. For the average Windows user a YaST-alike is a wise...
