There isn't all that much difference between Windows desktop and Windows server system. It's all in the software. that's all an OS is anyway, software. windows server is keyed different that the workstation and now they come off of different forks of the windows code. but even if that weren't true,...

Re: reactos in client/server?

( SNIP ) So there's LAMP, WAMP, WIMP and (hopefully) RAMP :P http://www.hmailserver.com/ why RAMP if a Windows version already is there? :D i'm guessing you mean WAMP? i actually like IIS, but the WIMP acronym is a bit mean. :-) there'll never be a RIMP so RAMP is about as close as it'll get. but a...

ROS will be both client and server. No need for 2 distros. Server software will be available via the package manager. i like the way NT and ubuntu did and are doing it. pre-package a server and a client. it would save so much time for end-users; a do it once so a thousand people don't have to do it...

the folder is blank but OoO still wants it.
then don't delete it--OOo may still use it for caching or something

Re: Bad news about OpenOffice.org

I have tested OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 RC and the installer is not working anymore on ReactOS. It complains about a plugins folder. I hope it will *not* affect the future of OpenOffice.org on ReactOS... is it not able to create the folder? or is it just missing? if you create the folder ahead of ...

reactos in client/server?

in the future of development, do you foresee a client and a server ISO of react available? (i think this would make sense). if so, i would like to suggest hmailserver be included on the server-side of things (along with AMP). hmail, apache, mysql, php and squirrelmail would be an awesome combo (alon...

Some people have obviously never seen the giant ntuser.dat files generated by users that rely on roaming profiles. I've seen them grow into the hundred megabyte range. Add on the folders for internet, desktop, and My Documents and people often grow their personal profile well into the gig range. Pe...

That would go back to the problem of programs storing data locally that should not be accessed by other users or passed over the network to the server. It is rather self explained I believe in the name. Local is stuff that stays local, change that and you will get headaches. how is naming and struc...

The actually data for the program is stored where it can easily be transferred, and does not fill up the registry with data which should not be loaded every time you start windows. Plus it suits the program a lot more. but that's going away from the original point. the folder structure is daft and ...

Settings are already stored in the ntuser.dat file. that is for your desktop and various NT specific settings. non-microsoft programs don't store their settings there. ntuser.dat is the complete HKCU registry hive and includes HKCU\Software\... It is a good design in many reasons. Take Shareaza for example. You do not want to be sending 600mg iso images back to a server then back to the user's computer. So in this case, the programs does place this in the localsettings folder. not really you still have to copy the profile to a central ser...

Then you would just kill a few hundred of options for ReactOS and part of it's point. how would encapsulating the theme into an archive format limit options? that would just make the themes easier to move around. (the .zip and the folders format is just an example and not limited to those 4 folders...

i still believe two "application data" folders is confusing. if it is just about roaming vs. local then the two should be clearly defined. The fact that it is in localsettings is enough. Really, if you are in there, you should know what your doing, or not be there. that would be fine if that's how ...
