Re: History History
CP/M was based on UNIX. Ie dos leads to UNIX if you go back far enough. Yes, that's what I was thinking when I said that. I remember reading back on the histories of DOS and linux and unix often referred to. This really isn't surprising considering the history of computing in general. Windows NT co...

Linux is supposed to be a free, opensource Unix derivative and Linux wasn't made to be a GUI system (it has FreeX86 with window managers on top of that). Whether a OS is a state-of-art OS is not made up by the fact if the GUI is ruining in user or in kmode. It's a matter of what the OS has under th...

Re: Marketing :)
You either have to compare Linux with Windows or Unix with Dos . I don't agree with that. Linux is supposed to be a free, opensource Unix derivative and Linux wasn't made to be a GUI system (it has FreeX86 with window managers on top of that). I think putting unix and linux side-by-side is valid (c...

I don't think that looks butt ugly... http://devnet.dnsalias.net/guidesign/modified_explorer.jpg That makes it lot easier to comprehend. Of course, in that case, the folder need some borders or contrast differences reworked on it, but still, already in this look, it is more "readable". I also made ...

*buzz* I'm sorry, but that answer is incorrect. ;) The only system-integral part of ReactOS that is written in C++ is Explorer, and the rest is all ANSI C. Also, Visual Studio refuses to open most of the relevant source files, since it can't find any dependancies. will i said vsc++ simply because t...

well, if all you need is the actual window designs, and layouts, etc and you could use visual c++ code, i'd do it in visual studio (my programming skills are limited to php and javascript).crappish wrote: ]So, any willing UI coders, that could consider "working for me", around? if you want to do that, you can kill the explorer.exe process and just create and run scripts from cmd.exe (you can even use cmd.exe as your shell). i don't see reactos as a gaming os. i see reactos as a replacement for windows. and my particular field of interest is networking (clients and server)....

First of all not meaning to bash you but all of the stuff you are talking as UI design seems to be merely GUI. UI design includes lots of other things even though GUI is one of the most important parts of it. It is important to understand and to keep these two separated as mere GUI design would sti...

.... Meanwhile I'm quite prepared to wade through developers notes, chagelogs, etc, to get the thing to work on my system, just as I do with linux. Open source = free as in free speech, not free beer., et al. good for you. i, however, don't see anything wrong with expecting a GUI for a GUI-heavy ba...

i think this would be a great resource site: http://toastytech.com/guis/ in terms of sheer ease of use and practicality, i believe the following interfaces to be good models: BeOS was quite easy to use and QNX looks similar a lot of people like MacOS but i found it restrictive WinXP's explorer seems...

Linux is really pretty simple if the distribution follows the File Heirarchy Standards. Its really quite simple - as simple as Unix was meant to be - in its current incantation. If you've mastered DOS then commandline in Unix and Linux is so simple to learn. Its only when you get caught up in the a...
