Re: Building a new PC, Windows 7

I'm not sure what you're looking for in a new system. Basicly, on x86/x64 at Intel's side, there are a few platforms you can go for: * Sandy Bridge (socket 1155), with 4 DIMM slots. 4GB modules are cheap, 8GB modules slightly more expensive. Released in April 2011 I think. * Sandy Bridge-E (socket 2...

Re: 0.3.1.4 Min. Sys. Requirements?

I did mention "boots properly" , not "also runs programs". Something like Start Menu will work, Notepad likely also, CMD apparently not. If you only consider system memory with which you can run programs fine, then you'd have to up to 512MB or so, "simply because FireFox and LibreOffice are such mem...

Re: Notepad problem

I'm not even sure Notepad can load/open freeldr.ini properly. Nice opportunity to try Metapad or Notepad++ then. As for CR, LF, CR+LF in Notepad, I hope ReactOS does a better job than Windows.. (meanwhile, would be nice if doubleclicked files without (known) extension would open in Notepad by defaul...

Re: 0.3.1.4 Min. Sys. Requirements?

Current trunk seems to work with the following settings: * 56MB RAM (phase 1 completes with 28MB, phase 3 boots properly with 32MB) * 360MB harddisk, single partition with 32MB free, 170MB pagefile and thus about 160MB used by ReactOS itself. It implies a 200MB disk will probably also work just fine...

Re: No drive letter for USB-Stick

ReactOS doesn't even have fully reliable bootup USB support (it's work in progress, and much appreciated), and you're brave enough to test the USB and pnp stacks at runtime instead of boottime? Nice experimenting :)

Re: r55833

Not tried this, sorry. I assume you got "log: -" set in your bochsrc to get visible output? Or specify a textfile there to log to and file a bug. Most people are likely using VMware, VirtualPC and QEMU as they're all a bit faster than Bochs. For the record, I've not been able to boot ReactOS in real...

Re: New CD Cover Design

Looks great now, only thing you might want to change is the memory requirements, setting them to 128MB as a general amount.
Perhaps trunk and/or 0.3.15 will be able to reduce this to 96, 64, 48, 40 or even 32MB as bare minimum without stalling or crashing.

Re: USB now works

A guide would be interesting yes. A guide for testing USB in virtualised environments would also be nice, as getting debug logs on real hardware in single-machine environments is sheer impossible (and it would enable me to see why my Logitech G15 USB keyboard won't work in trunk ReactOS). Another in...

Re: 0.3.14 Screenshots

Ehm you might want to start with high-resolution wallpapers in the first place. Somebody bundled a few wallpapers with 800x600 (x16 ?) as bitmaps with ReactOS 0.3.14. In other words, resolution changes (real hardware, QEMU, Bochs, VMware etc) are really really ugly. Or you must insist on 800x600 scr...

Re: USB now works

On real hardware, how does one save these debug logs if not possessing a null-modem cable and 2nd pc? First to RAM and then to floppy drive at intervals? * Booting InstallCD from USB CD (well, actually an ISO on Zalman VE200 which presents itself to hardware as DVD drive) didn't get further than NTO...

Re: ReactOS 0.3.14 on a Pentium 200

Even though this hardware won't run anything except the OS. Why wouldn't it be able to run some stuff? Besides SYSSETUP (graphical phase 2) , between 48 and 64MB is enough to run ReactOS. Perhaps something like Opera would run, or a few tiny games or server tasks. You'll notice the screenshot indic...

Re: Faster booting idea

The comment about the BIOS loading directly into a virtual machine sounds like a good idea. Then someone could run Reactos as it is now in a virtual machine OS even on hardware which is not currently compatible. It could even have hardware remapping to make up for things Reactos doesn't support rig...

The project coordinator's email announcement makes a reference to this late developer in a respecting way :)

Goodluck promoting ReactOS meanwhile. Any chance of a 'feedback/experiences' thread here on the forums?

Re: Faster booting idea

Also, about the concept, payloads depends mostly in coreboot. That was what I was talking about. Now, instead of the usual one they have for MS-DOS/Windows, why not modify that and put portions of Reactos in there and make sure all the code is at least 32-bit? So flash whatever boot core and a cust...

Re: I BEG OF YOU DeVELOPERS OF REACTOS!!!

The more functionality ReactOS gets, the more flaws you'll discover :) Especially programs that will refuse to run because of missing libraries or lack of certain code/API implementations. Windows95-quality might actually be pretty close, as that was a very limited operating system with hardly any h...
