Re: Security Software

[...] Once again, I'm going to play the "Distro CDs solve everything" card - bundle, say, ClamWin and Spybot in with the default install and you're done. [...] I couldn't find any hint that Spybot Search & Destroy would be opensource. And as it is copyrighted to the Safer Networking Ltd. it can't b...

Re: 3D Desktop

You could just rewrite Looking Glass for ROS. I have seen it, and it is AWESOME! The word "just" is debatable here, since someone would have to take the time and effort to do this. If someone DOES feel like giving it a go, I'd suggest porting it from Java to C++ (rather than plain ol' C), since tha...

Re: Remove the greatest weeknes of Windows

Fine. Won't do it again. It's just that I've seen it on other forums (even in books). Just wondering why it's frowned upon. Well, It's generally because of people like this dragging the good name of the dollar sign through the mud: OMg bill gate is teh GAY he wants to take zover the WORDL Windows $...

Re: A suggestion to the React team!

If you find enough developers who are interested in doing such a project, you are welcome to go ahead and start coding. Don't expect any of the ReactOS dev team to get involved, though - they're cloning Windows because they like Windows, not OSX. OSX is based on the BSD project (which is Open Source...

Re: "React16" and "React98" concepts Viable?

And please send any ideas for this project, incase i decide to actually go through with it. :) You might want to use FreeDOS as your starting point, and the ReactOS page on Wikipedia has a See Also link that points to something called HX DOS Extender , which might also be of interest to you. It's w...

Re: ROS should take-over the missing Win32/Win9x flatform

I was actually thinking of starting a project like that and then merging the results into ReactOS. Tell me what you think about this at fdwboy@gmail.com While not an OS programmer, I can tell you that it would be rather like merging Windows and Linux - possible, maybe, but the fact remains that the...

Re: Security Software

I know that the devs want to keep ROS small, but what they need to consider is that no piece of code is perfect. What if, say, Microsoft wanted to slow your work and released a virus that attacked a vulnerability in ROS. Plus, with all the security problems with Windows, security should be your #1 ...

Distro CDs will solve this.

Re: Live CD

Unless you find VMWare Player, you have to pay. And if you do find VMWare Player, they ask for some personal info like your email address. Here is the URL: http://www.vmware.com/download/player/ This is why I downloaded the install once and then burned it to a million backups so that I never have t...

Re: media player

OpenOffice is Sun-funded. They might not like it that you took the media player out of OO and put it in ROS. If a media player is going to be included, it will probably be MPC. VLC has had security holes discovered lately. OpenOffice is LGPL and ReactOS is GPL, which means that there would be no le...

Re: Live CD

QEMU is good too. I tried ROS and let me install Firefox (hd image will grow, though). You really ought to try it out in VMWare to get an impression of how it runs. After running it in QEMU for so long, I'd built up a mental association with ReactOS being slow, even though I knew that it was due to...

QEMU uses SDL, and it seems that SDL sometimes has some issues running on 9x systems. Perhaps SDL is the cause of the QEMU problems?

Re: ROS should take-over the missing Win32/Win9x flatform

I agree with you. But still, ReactOS will not be complete without support for those old programs. Windows XP, Server 2003, and Vista have support for legacy apps (though Vista's security features sometimes get in the way). If Microsoft can do it, why can't ROS devs do it too? I don't have any progr...

Re: ReactOS 3.5 works in VirtualBox

Beta version is scheduled at the end of 2008. I thought that the 0.5.x series was when things reached beta? I can see the 0.4.x (alpha) releases happening around the end of this year, but not the 0.5.x ones - possibly they'll be here by the end of 2009. Or are the 0.4.x releases going to be tagged ...
