I've heard good things about damn small linux, it might be perfect for your machine.

As for when ReactOS will be done, well, 1.0 is several years away probably. But I'd bet it will be alot more usable in a year or two.

Maybe you have an old version of vmware, because networking works fine in vmware 5.0 with ROS .2.8, and it's setup automatically. Try pinging your computer or try using FTP on a site like ftp.gwdg.de.

Thanks for showing us off some cool compatibility. There is audio support in ROS, however directsound is rather incomplete, if even present in the install CDs at this point. I know there were having even more luck with previous versions of Winamp (2.x and 3.x), you might want to see if sound works o...

"A line that's just a pixel or so too low" "a caption that's badly centered", those are examples of bugs in the UI, they will be fixed after bugs like ones that cause ROS to not install at all on systems at all are fixed, unless you would care to help out. "A gray that's too dark", give me a break, ...

Hello, welcome to the forums. The simple answer to all your complaints is that ReactOS is an an alpha (early work in progress) state at this point, it is not really usable as an OS yet and we don't pretend it to be. Nevertheless, we are working everyday to make it better. As an openly developed oper...

1. The iso image (as referred to on the download page, the real name for it is the bootable install CD) should be used to install ReactOS on virtual hardware, or on real hardware on a drive by itself. Use the live cd if those are not possible for you. 2. I'm sure that the live-cd memory requirements...

We were having a discussion in the forums. For legal reasons surrounding mpeg4/divx, we can't just include MPlayer or VLC as they have their own codecs for this.

VLC does have a decent playlist and interface, it's under the Skins 2 interface. Regardless, by the time ReactOS actually implements directshow as VLC requires for video, I'm sure they'll have improved the playlist and interface. And furthermore, ReactOS aims to be compatible with as many media play...

I'm pretty sure ROS .2.8 will install to a 75 meg or so partition without trouble.

It only uses 45 megs or so right after the install.

Hey Nick Very soon Firefox will run pretty well on reactOS. We recently implemented the aplhablend function so that the menus will show up properly, and a huge winsock2 update is about to be committed that will enable firefox to actually accessing the web successfully, at least the vasy majority of ...

Unless you have to edit certain stuff to get it to work, it's more like read the volume label only at this time. If you've had any success stories, I'd love to hear them, but i just tried it ROS .2.8, 19052, and .2.8 live on a primary NTFS partition, and they all saw the volume and it's label, but c...

I guess the main problem would be grabbing the MS NTFS driver off the NTFS partition during setup. You would need to either instruct people to copy it to a disc themselves before setup, or have a readable free NTFS driver included during the instal. Since there is a fully working readonly ntfs driv...

I was just talking with Alex Ionescu over IRC, who is very familiar with NTFS and does alot of important work for ROS. He says that "implementing a free NTFS driver is not a priority right now. Getting the XP one to run is." This is of course in addition to the priority of implementing a good free F...
