Re: First laptop for under 100USD and soon run ROS?

If I'm reading it right, CE is embedded in a ROM chip. You'd need to either replace the ROM chip (if it's socketed), or create a bootloader to "crash" Windows into ReactOS.

It's not so much about ReactOS as operating systems in general. More of a "friendly reference."

For someone whose user name takes after an open-source operating system, you sure have a negative look at open-source software. Your sole reason for ReactX being a "waste" is apparently that MS already wrote it. Where do you draw the line? Should ReactOS stop working on the ROSExplorer, an...

It's a hybrid kernel.

I believe the current target is a 5.x-compatible kernel. That's not to say that NT 4 compatibility isn't important. Even Vista still uses NT 4-type drivers at a low level.

Is the amount of RAM a "recommendation", or a hard limitation?

I have a fully working 486DX at 33 MHz, Cirrus Logic ISA VGA with 1MB and VESA extensions in its bios and a 255 MB harddisk, but I cannot test ReactOS on it because that PC cannot boot from CD-ROM. It must boot from floppy or harddisk first... Sincerely, Carlo Bramini. Try the "Smart Boot Mana...

You can forget about the 286; that's a 16-bit processor.

A debugger wouldn't be necessary to find out if the card worked, although it would be handy to find out why it didn't, if that were the case.

I'm pretty sure they make serial ports that'll fit on a PCI card. I don't know anything about them, though.

I really wish I still had some old 486 boxes around. The slowest I've got are some Pentium 200s. If I could get a spare 20 GB hard drive, I'd try to get Vista on one (previous personal best was PIII 600 Mhz and 256 MB of RAM).

The only real way to know is to try it, since the developers probably don't have the resources to try all the hardware out there. My guess is that the 9xx and X-series ones will work fine. Try out the LiveCD, before you commit to an install.

Ok. My GMA 950 works fine, so the MacBooks are *probably* safe.

Is the bug in the driver, or in the hardware? It would seem strange that Intel couldn't support a standard from 1994.
