Re: We urgently need a beta

The Fabba: It sounds like you're not accounting for the fact that we have zero full-time employees, and hundreds of such bugs. I understand that there are ~5 developers, all working part time. There's no question that limits what can be done. At the same time I think 'hundreds of ->such<- bugs' is m...

Re: We urgently need a beta

Well that was sloppy. The second quote was supposed to be:
According to some info, in Europe there are some people that brings machines with Intel ME disabled by modifing the necesary components to just delete all possible components from Intel ME...

Re: We urgently need a beta

Never raise a post stating that ReactOS needs to speed up development or it will...(replace with your own text) . Posts like this come regularly if not so often these days but are seldomly received well by the community nor the developers. It will also have little effect on the speed of development...

Re: Development Direction

Many interesting thoughts. Ancient: Out of the box the Mint Cinnamon will read NTFS, and will work with most any file system. Installing the Valve variant of WINE (named PROTON or maybe Proton) gets you a very high compatibility with Windows API's while on Linux. It is easy to make a boot USB system...

Re: Development Direction

Wow, what a lot of great comments. First, I hope it's clear how much I admire what's been done. If I had a spare million dollars I'd land it on this project. Unfortunately my wife and I are several zeroes short of that. I'll make a small donation in a couple of months when we can afford it, but it w...

Development Direction

I've used Windows since 3.1 and still have that machine. Another machine runs a '98 system. I spend perhaps 6 hours daily using XP and in the last week, maybe 30 hours getting ROS 0.4.11 up on a Dell D610 laptop after trying and failing to make it work on a (desktop) Dimension 3000. I spent several ...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

The corollary to "The hurrier I go the behinder I get" is "The more I study the less I know." After all of the above I watched the youtube video showing the install of ROS on a Dell D630 laptop. He did nothing unusual, but I do have a D610 so why not? I had loaded 0.4.11 onto a 2.5" PATA disk last n...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

I was wrong: The disk is already damaged (per bootable scandisk) if you stop BEFORE the MBR is written. On a retry -- 5 gig partition, real format -- it reported that several files and subfolders of system32/config/ were damaged. Next time I tried -- exact same setup & procedure -- 'amount of free s...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

This appears to be CORE14990, although it's surely a regression. I have updated there. Gonna go back & see if I can get an idea when it showed up. It doesn't seem to be very recent and I wonder if it occurs only on real machine installs or even some less common condition. "Scandisk is a filesystem d...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

If I do a real format of the partition outside of ROS then boot the system CD and do the install in the usual way BUT WITHOUT installing the MBR then I have a disk that SCANDISK pretty much likes: It complains about the amount of free space being incorrectly reported but if allowed to fix that, seem...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

Scandisk from a floppy. It REALLY doesn't like that HDD and if allowed will 'fix' all kinds of things. As does ROS itself, at least sometimes, if booted from the HDD following the install. Sometimes you get a blank screen after the boot, sometimes a couple screenfulls of we're checking your disk, fi...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

Thanks for the help on this, Oldman. Here's the whole of the log from the install. There's no 'debug' option for that and since the install results in multiple badly damaged files on the disk I don't see a point in booting with the 'debug' choice. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= PuTTY log 2018.09.17 07:04:5...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

I did fix one error: Reading the logs I had I found mighty complaints about USB being enabled. So I redid the log of the OS load process with USB turned off in the BIOS and that did reduce the volume of errors although there was no change in the results or in the log area that looks most suspicious ...

Re: ROS 4.10/4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

I've now -- sort of -- logged ROS booting on another machine. The two machines are the Dell Dimension 3000 on which I have a spare HDD that I'm using for ROS and a Dell Dim 4700 that I run daily. When both run XP they can communicate over COM 1 serial ports using the ROS settings. However, when I bo...

Re: ROS 0.4.10/0.4.11 hang on boot after 'Verifying the file system'

I have switched to using a real CD and also downloaded the last 0.4.10 version again. The results differ in no important way from earlier attempts. I'll see if I can create a log file: This might take a few days. Or maybe more than one, since there seem to be multiple failure paths. I've no idea wha...
