Re: Make VirtualBox compatibility a top priority

I've managed to test the new 0.3.12 release in VirtualBox yesterday and I must say it's a MASSIVE improvement over the older version!! I can really say the OS is finally coming together. Also, Guest Additions run much better: now I can move the mouse pointer freely between my Linux desktop and the R...

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

It's been more than a year since I've started this thread and things have changed a lot since then: not only ReactOS(for the better ;)), but also my perspective. Two years of using Linux and Wine have left a bad taste in my mouth. But don't get me wrong Linux is great(I love it) and Wine is a good l...

Make VirtualBox compatibility a top priority

Today, the first contact between computer users and a new operating system is most likely to take place in virtual machines. Out of all these VM programs, VirtualBox is both popular and(mostly) free software. So why not concentrate more forces on getting ReactOS to run the VirtualBox Guest Additions...

Re: Feasability of a idle idea. SUA, but reversed?

I have been able to run on LUK 0.2.4.1 everything I could run on Wine 1.1.83. However, it has a quirk: you have to manually reset the .exe files to open with /usr/bin/wine. And for some reason their desktop shortcuts are broken. So LUK works: Linux is actually running Windows apps ;) but all in all ...

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

@greenie: "Though that is far different than saying reactos should shut up shop and work on luk." Please note that even though my initial post did point to something like that, I've since come to change my view. I see now why ReactOS and The Linux Unified Kernel should coexist. On top of ...

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

@Haos
I'm sorry, you are right. Let me rephrase by saying I was referring more to the concept than the actual current state of the project. It has just as must hidden potential as ROS did before it could run anything meant to run on Windows.

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

If at first I was lobbying for the ROS developers to adopt a "Linux that ran Windows software" concept, I've since come to understand their point. But, as many people run Windows, and like it, so other people run Linux, and like it, so I think the idea/concept of a "Linux that runs Wi...

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

@Aeneas: Open source drivers are very important in my opinion. I once did a retail install of XP on a brand new Asus M2N motherboard and of course the motherboard came with an XP driver CD, but I first had to install and boot XP and only then could I install the motherboard drivers Asus made. So XP...

@RaptorEmperor
Add to the motherboard drivers, the fact that ROS can't be shipped with the plethora of proprietary Windows network-card drivers either...

Re: The Linux Unified Kernel

@FlyingIsFun1217: Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. From previous posts I've come to know that ReactOS developers truly dislike the Linux architecture so my initial post is pretty much useless. @Haos: Speed(of development) was my point. Ever since I've heard of ReactOS, I've been co...

The Linux Unified Kernel

I was browsing the net and came upon the Linux Unified Kernel (LUK). Here's the project's website http://www.longene.org/en/index.php and it's wikipage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Unified_Kernel. In a nutshell they're making an operating system kernel intended to be binary-compatible with app...
