Sure they risk API breaking. They just don't care, its a laziness issue. Its well known that many applications cheat and use the registry.

If it does work it won't be perfectly accurate anyways. It does DirectX and graphics work, which it will either fail or crash on.

When your chasing a moving target, you want to aim for the next thing, not the previous thing... By not chasing Vista or its predecessors (If Microsoft releases betas it would be more possible to stay up to date) ReactOS will be doomed to "last generation" APIs and sometimes technology.

Only thing i can think of: An on-board card has a likeliness to not work... If your gonna get a dedicated card, make it a NVidia TNT2 or GeForce 4, depending on what graphics power you need. Those two seem to match your computers power. Oh, and BTW, Only use NVidia if you want to have 3D acceleratio...

I highly prefer Linux and Apache solutions over anything Microsoft has to offer for many different situations. I'd also like to point out that its very unlikely Linux will cost more to maintain - A study was done a while ago that only had Linux over Windows in cost in one of there many situations......

They provide nightly builds. Unless you plan to make modifications, you don't even need to build. However, due to the likeliness you ARE modifying it and know about the nightly builds, I will point out that its very redundant to not checkout the whole tree at least once...

ReactOS and Duke Nukem (Taking) Forever are completely unrelated, as similar as it seems. Plus, the community can see the progress before their eyes... Every line of code that gets entered becomes public to the version control at the very moment its final packets for the operation reach the server b...

This is because ReactOS still, as of now, does not support all of the features. Just use the video driver as the only selected feature, then reboot, and you'll atleast have graphics, asside from 3D Acceleration until ReactX, and even then VMWare 3D acceleration sucks. (But you can't blame them, its ...

Linux doesn't HAVE a driver architecture in the sense that Windows does. You do a lot of direct manipulation of kernel data structures (horrible idea), which is why drivers have to be updated almost every kernel update. That's a slight exaggeration, but not by much. I feared that. And i know it suc...

Wha? Xfree is still known to people as an Xserver? LoL. The only reason to use it is in the massively potent "DirectFB" in its Xserver, and even at that, its not really desirable to use any part of its code base.

Excellent progress. Instead of instant gratification, code that will be better in the long run is always better. I'm not one who is good at programming, but i try hard, and still don't get too much success, so i have to respect how well you've already handled this.

ReactOS is not optimized in many matters at this point. I suppose by beta it will be much closer to Windows 3.1 levels in RAM use than it is now.
