For this task which requires speed and reliability I would be hesitant to recommend the incomplete ReactOS. Personally I would go with a Gentoo system with a centralised LTSP server like here.. http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20050509-newsletter.xml They never got the openmosix idea working but if...

B, A, A, Open Office, E, A 1) As previously mentioned, it would be best to do it once and properly instead of a collection of hacks. Wine is using option A and as an example, the latest release has broken start menu functionality for several applications. (They don't see it as being there and the in...

Rather than doing the work ourselves, it would be better to depend upon an application that is already proven to be reliable.

If it's any good then sure. The thing that worries me is that ext2 is not a journaled system, this is something that doesen't matter at all until you suddenly lose power and get annoying errors for days to come.

I could live with that. Personally I would still prefer to see a default of Windows XP so I don't have to touch it at all. Being able to select a different mode from a right click menu would be helpful for extreme cases, especially if our compatability ends up being better than Microsoft's.

Or we could raise funds for a massive ad capain. I think the best way is to develop a working product first, that way we can "hit the ground running". Building up attention now may lead to a relationship where we become known as buggy and incompatible in the same way as people think of Lin...

In order to achieve compatability we would have to make ReactOS report a Windows version to the installer. Hopefully a value edited in a configuration file but NT 5.1 would work fine. I know Doom3 and AT&T Text to Speech both require 2000 or Xp to even install. Same for the Doom3 Patch.

So we'll introduce 3D desktop APIs. Thing is I haven't met that many serious computer users who are willing to upgrade to Longhorn as it appears to be becoming and software developers will always seek backwards compatability. Here's a thought though, Longhorn is coming out in 2006 (current timetable...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v688/rastilin/startmenu.jpg As you can see I do absolutely nothing, I believe the original Windows default works fine. To be honest I don't really mind what happens, if the default GUI works ok then I won't bother editing it. It might help you to understand me if y...

I see no reason to restrict features on the basis that some hypothetical users would become "intimidated".

Conversely the default setup has to be usable and comprehensive. I don't fancy the idea of spending a sizeable chunk of time reconfiguring my start menu every time I reinstall.

A user-configurable scheduling system would be a very good idea, in my opinion. A user configurable system would be perfect, especially if it can be set to extremes in either direction and is easily accessable from a menu setting (not in the registry). I would really appreciate some factual numbers...

I forgot to mention a critical point. The trackers will also seed the files they track. In this way we do not depend on people seeding, however heavy demand for a file will be handled better.

Yes but the seeding is a problem. You really cant force people to seed the packets they've just downloaded and that's why I have my doubts about the bittorrent based solution, since bittorrent needs lots of seeders in order to work properly. Several people will make an effort but I'm not planning t...

Erm. I don't see any problem. Why can't the software just offer links to original sites? Straight to the installer. When you start the software it queries the master server about the list of available software but when the user downloads/installs i.e. MSN Messenger with it, it downloads the packet ...
