I'll ignore the insult. I studied operating systems as part of my university degree before many of you were born. Operating systems were written in assembler then - C hadn't even been invented - but that doesn't mean it's the right solution for today when memory and processor power is not a big issu...

you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. I think he makes a very good point. While it may not be desirable to have programs in a mixture of languages making up a project, the decision to develop in C is surely not going to help the situation of a limited number of developers with limit...

GreatLord, I didn't say the developers were lazy, just that there don't seem to be enough to make meaningful progress. Force, you're probably right that the solution is to attract funding, but that's probably a chicken / egg situation. People only started to put money into Linux once it became clear...

I don't deny any of that. However, if you make ISOs available for ordinary user types to try, you must expect to get back ordinary user type comments from people who found they couldn't use it for anything. I have no desire to detract from the work of the people who are working on it. However it act...

Yep, I do understand that this is Alpha software. But in Wikipedia I seem to recall it said that this project started around 1996. Must be the longest Alpha in computing history! It just makes me wonder whether it is possible to complete a stable Windows clone in a reasonable timespan without the sa...

Why I'm giving up on ReactOS for now

I have spent way too much time installing different builds of ReactOS to have a fair chance of seeing what it could do. Thanks to help in this forum I found out how to get files into a QEMU image, and by going back to an old release I managed to get Firefox to install. But it seems clear that ReactO...

Well, the FF installer seems to have locked up the mouse pointer when I clicked Next at "Ready to start installing Firefox".

None of the Windows programs I copied across to see if they would work would even start. :(

Time to give up, I think.

It only works with uncompressed images and the program only supports FAT16, so it will not take care about long filenames. Ah, that probably explains it. I formatted the partition using FAT32. The suggestion from Ged worked fine in the end. But I'm still struggling. How do you report bugs? I copied...

I tried the editdisk program but I can't get it to work with any of my images. It complains about an invalid cluster size of something.

How to get files in and out

I have installed ReactOS from the latest snapshot under QEMU on Windows 98. It works fine as far as it goes, but I can't see any way to get files or programs into it. I can't give it access to the host drive, because that would be dangerous, and it is NTFS anyway. The network card appears to be work...
