Re: Commandline only Win32 from ReactOS?

Yea... I was looking for something like "Single User Mode" on BSD or the Recovery Console on 2K - XP, but as the only install / boot option, and (unlike "Recovery Console") capable of running most of the command line PE files as DOS with HX DOS extender can, and still allowing fo...

Re: NTFS question

That's re-assuring Haos. I don't mind "we don't have time yet" answers... I don't like "we have no intention of ever" answers... there should be some plan for it at some point in the future, otherwise people will develop other parts in a manner which will have to be completely re...

Re: NTFS question

Err, we never said ntfs will be our primary filesystem. it will be supported for completeness, but right now we go in ext3 direction. And this is the single most frustrating thing I see frequently coming from ROS development... the primary reason to have an open source NT based OS is native access ...

Re: NTFS question

Yes... but when you are being asked about completeness, it's as complete as it can be from a Unix point of view only. The reason NTFS is interesting on a Windows platform (over and above e2fs/e3fs, FFS, BFS, AFS, ResizerFS etc) is the Windows NT platform specific features is supports natively. fastF...

Commandline only Win32 from ReactOS?

I have followed (somewhat bemused) the progress of ReactOS for a long long time... before NT was the target. Early builds I have (somewhere) booted ReactOS to something like a DOS prompt that would run Win32 PE command line programs (Info-ZIP for example). I'm interested in having such a desktop fre...

Re: NTFS question

Several attempts have been made to create a FUSE compatible layer for Windows, and while User-mode file system extensions which perform the same function (from a users point of view) are quite common, the design of FUSE and the file-system modules that work with it are so bound to the Unix paradigm ...

This is (IMHO) an incredibly premature discussion... what it looks like isn't nearly as important as how it works. Having said that... I was curious to see the UXTheme.dll in my ReactOS\System32 folder too... which is what lead me here. I've been skinning Windows since Windows 95, and TBH I think th...

Very nice find... I may have to blog that. ;)

I was very impressed with the articles, and especially his demo renderers at the end... I'm not sure how the would work under ROS but when he says they are slow... the last time I saw text being manipulated that fast on screen was under BeOS... okay, my PC was slower then and it was a little smoothe...

Can I ask for support for WinNT IFS to be considered?

IMHO, OpenSource File System Drivers for the NT platform are not really the place of ReactOS... where as support for existing IFS drivers, recognisers etc is.

Just a thought.

Yes, I don't think it would be a matter of "Winning" a Patent action, so much as financially damaging with it. If they can drag it out long enough, it may be very difficult for non-commercial (or not yet commercial) organisations to withstand the legal fees... and that is about the thing w...

 Was I ranting about Microsoft? Ranting probably, not all of it about Microsoft, and not all of it bad. I try to remain level headed about their corporate practices. Nobody can be right all the time, if MS make a bad judgement call that only makes them a more human organisation. Critic...

Microsoft in Schools

Okay, BSOD = Kernel Panic = Bad Driver or Failing Device I've seen BSOD very little on NT 5 based systems, unless I install a hacked, or "as close as I can get". Usually old device that has not NT 5 (2k/XP/2k3) drivers. Or there is a problem device, usually overheat, dry joints, or cracked...

NTFS is new in some respects... Granted... minor upgrades... NTFS 5 adds support for many standard unix ideas and WinFS (if it ever gets released) will incorporate BeOS' Extended attribute database lookup... Still doesn't make it an original idea. ;) Threading existsed prior to VMS, and co-operativ...

I thought I'd written enough so I shut up, but the other point going around in my head was... Just what "idea" do Microsoft think they were the originators of in Windows? DOS, Volume Letters 8.3 file names and such are CP/M, Directory trees were.... Unix? File Attributes are CP/M ACLs are ...

Cold War! Ewww.

I remember the cold war, and I can assure you that there was nothing stable about it. It was incredibly scary. No, I am European and very glad you can't apply patents to software. It would kill IT development completely if it were ever to be applied. I hope, as you are suggesting, that if the red bu...
