Re: Congratulations for 0.3.12!
@alexei Firstly I believe it is actually the aim of the ReactOS project to be compatible with windows applications and windows drivers in a genuine (i.e. not wine) Win NT/Win32 environment. This means sticking to the general architecture where possible and implementing the features that applications...

Re: ReactOS on Wine
I think he means to create a windows like shell for an X session. Maintaining all of the windows shell metaphors for the wine environment (drive letters, start menu, system tray etc) Needless to say no open source implementation of explorer.exe is yet complete enough to use in this manner and neithe...

Re: Pronounciation of "OS" in "ReactOS"
There's always going to be people who pronounce these sort of thing differently. I prefer the acronym form for OLED for example and I wont let anyone tell me differently. But when it comes to 'OS' it's always one word, same with Mac OS for me. The difference is largely irrelevent; in this text drive...

I pronounce it as one word, like in DOS.

Re: Active Desktop
IIRC active desktop was all part and parcel of a functionality in the old explorers that allowed a folder to have custom HTML backgrounds. I loved messing around with it on windows 9x but as time moved on I came to see it as superfluous and clunky. It wouldn't adapt well to changes in the filesystem...

Re: Google SoC
I think the real reason Google don't support ReactOS is PR. ReactOS, by dint of its fundamental mission aims, can be interpreted as hostile towards MS. Google might not want to seem too much like its encroaching on MS's space. Counterexample - ChromeOS. Well that operates fundamentally differently t...

Re: is ti possible to recompile kernel like linux ?
That's not the case from my experience. It's entirely possible to strip out so much of the kernel that you need to do a recompile to get additional hardware support. Also IIRC some drivers are designed such that they have to be compiled in. A given distro may need to make tradeoffs in what drivers ...

Re: BIG REQUEST: Donate for USB !
I think it's not a completely good idea... think about some people who requires changes or things like that... if they actually "paid" for the soft development and they're not conformed with the results, they'll get annoying with the devs (I don't know if it happens often in the general f...

Re: is ti possible to recompile kernel like linux ?
You will always need to recompile in order to support other architectures. Please differ compile and recompile. *shrugs* Why? I can see what you intend to distinguish here, but in the context of support for different architectures, which is what the OP meant, it makes little difference. One can com...

Re: is ti possible to recompile kernel like linux ?
You don't need to recompile the kernel, it's fully configurable and dynamic by design. The NT kernel is very different than the linux kernel. Quite frankly, I find the idea of recompiling kernels absolutely insane. You will always need to recompile in order to support other architectures. Also reco...

Cool sounds good!
I haven't tested it, but I think I'll jump right ahead and ask what will come to mind for many here:
Source code?

Re: How to get React OS to work on VMLite
Sure, and thats an interpretation many in the FOSS community would, on the face of it, accept. But then you've got people like the people behind this VMLite scenario who disagree, and you have to explain why that is. On the other end of the spectrum you have those who would zealously reject all prop...

Re: How to get React OS to work on VMLite
This is the old chestnut about what constitutes a 'derived work' (which I think is the GPL terminology). Does linking a library file make it a 'derived work'? Does dynamically linking a library file make it a 'derived work'? Does reading the source code and making tightly integrated components that ...

Re: Who is using Reactos all day ?
A video showing someone using Ros for a certain app over a certain time on certain hardware won't show you the numerous hardware issues, potential crashes, user interface rough edges and stuff. Consider that they might be pretty lucky to have found a hardware/software combination that works. That sa...
