We researched and found the likely source of this promblem - sending flush
cache command to ATAPI devices (the same thing that killed, dead, LG CD-ROMS
using Mandrake 9.x a little over a year ago).

The good news:
Filip has got it fixed in his tree, and I suspect it'll be committed ASAP.

The bad news:
This is, as I think all involved can see, bad. Really bad. I think it's so
bad it warrants a withdrawal of the current livecd until a new one can be
made with corrected atapi.sys.
