I've installed ReactOS on real hardware. I'm happy to test.
If this isn't the right forum section for this post, let me know. I just got ReactOS 0.4.8 installed on my Windows XP compatible computer and I was curious about whether or not hardware testers were welcome. I can also write documentation if need be. I'm not a very good programmer beyond glibc, so I doubt I'd be able to help much with bug fixing. If any of this sounds helpful to the project, just let me know. I'd be happy to do something to contribute in my spare time.

How should I begin? Is there anything that the developers are wondering works/doesn't work specifically?

On real hardware, I imagine that the devs are mostly curious about how specific hardware works.
